What types of running clothes do you need?

Pulling on the right kit helps you to adopt the mindset of a runner—it’s a simple concept, but when you feel your best, you perform your best. When running is as much mental as it is physical, you can’t underestimate the impact that looking and feeling the part has on performance.
With that in mind, it’s important to consider a combination of technical details, from quick-drying and sweat-wicking, to breathable, lightweight, and comfortable—and how this impacts your running experience.
In a sport where everything is tracked in miles and minutes, look to specific kit qualities that help you to get the most of getting out there.

What kit should you not wear running?

This is a simple one. The answer is: kit that wasn't made for running. Cotton, for example, is comfortable, but isn’t built for running—it’s best to go for a fabric more breathable and sweat-wicking. You’ve got enough reasons telling you to turn back—you don’t need your clothes to be one of them.

Can I use Align leggings for running?

We get it—the Align legging is what we’re famous for. We love it and we know you do, too. But we’re also aware of its limitations. It’s a breathable, sweat-wicking option than more than holds its own in a yoga flow, but if you want a legging that can keep pace, you need to diversify.

How do I dress for cold weather runs?

When it comes to running in the cold of winter, or even in the transitional weather of autumn and spring, layers are your friend—but knowing which ones to wear can be tough.
With all phases of your run in mind, from the warm-up to the cool-down, layering lightweight gear, rather than relying on thermals, is key. One top tip is always wear one layer less than you think you need, as you don’t want to be in a position where you're needing to strip off too many items and carry everything to the finish line.

How do I dress for spring and summer runs?

Remember: less is more in the heat and sun—and it doesn’t have to be scorching for you to start shedding the layers. As temperatures rise, factors like sweat-wicking and breathability become even more important, and the quicker you pick up the pace, then quicker your body temperature rises, too. As things get hotter, shorts and vests become key.

Do I wear waterproofs if it's raining?

Even when it’s raining, water-proofing isn’t always the answer. Instead, something lightweight and water-repellent is recommended. This will protect you from the worst of the elements whilst still offering a level of breathability and comfort.
For something to be totally waterproof, it can’t really be breathable, which means that although it’ll protect you from the moisture outside, you’ll be wet with sweat on the inside, sometimes leading to dehydration. Instead, many water-repellent and windproof layers come with plenty of ventilation, allowing you to keep cool whilst braving the elements.

What do I wear if I'm running in the dark?

The more you are seen, the safer you are. But that doesn’t always have to mean strapping into a full hi-vis vest after sunset. Stock up on some lululemon accessories and you can effectively shine a spotlight on your performance to passers-by.
